10 Essential Tips to Battle Dryness and Keep Your Skin Supple This Winter
Whew, this winter has really been something so far — are you all with me? If you live on the East Coast like I do, this winter has seemed much harsher than previous years, and my skin and hair can definitely tell the difference. Summer was full of hot, sticky humidity, and now we are dealing with single degree temperatures and dew points. Between the summer and winter extremes, it’s extremely important for me to switch up my skincare routine so my skin does not suffer. All of these tips are part of my routine during colder months
Exfoliate to ensure dead skin is removed: If you aren’t exfoliating, ooh no baby, what is you doing? Exfoliating, with either a physical (gentle) or chemical exfoliant, will help get rid of dry, dull skin and keep your complexion looking luminous. And don’t forget your body! Use moisturizers with oil: Because I have combination skin that can get oily, I refrain from using oils on my face when it’s humid outside. During winter, I appreciate oils because they protect your skin from harsh winds and seal in moisture, especially when used after your shower. Personally, I prefer lighter oils like argan and jojoba, but you can use any oil your skin likes.
Use a creamy or moisturizing cleanser: Perfect example — so I ran out of cleanser a couple of weeks ago, and began using a detox facial soap bar that I had received during the summer. After a couple of days, my skin was sooo tight and dry! I immediately booked it to the store and bought some Noxzema, which is a cold cream cleanser. Just make sure you check the ingredients if you go drugstore brand, as many cold creams contain mineral oil, which can clog pores. Black Girl Sunscreen is excellent because it contains carrot seed oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, avocado, and shea butter.
If you like butters, make sure you mix them with a water-based product: I see a lot of people using pure oils and butters to “moisturize” when it’s cold. Unfortunately, these types of products do not actually moisturize your skin on their own, they only seal in moisture and provide a protective layer. If you’re using an oil after your skin is already dry after your shower, it’s not really going to do much and you could face dryness in the future. One of my favorite things to do is add oil to my aloe vera gel to give it a kick. Or, mix Shea Shea Bakery’s body butter (which smells delicious!) or BGLH Blended Butter with aloe vera gel.
Use a night cream: During summer, I can often get away with a quick swipe of witch hazel on my face before I go to bed without moisturizer or a little bit of aloe vera gel. But during winter, I want something heavier to work its magic while I sleep. That way, I wake up with my skin brightened and already moisturized.
Use a moisturizing face spray throughout the day: Harsh winds and temperatures can definitely dry out your face during the day. And sometimes, it’s even worse if you have on a full face of makeup. To prevent this, use a moisturizing setting spray to refresh your skin and provide moisture without ruining your makeup. I personally avoid face sprays with glycerin as it’s a humectant, but I know a lot of people like them.
Wash off your makeup and allow your skin to breathe: Sometimes, I’m incredibly lazy and don’t wash off my makeup before bed, and end up waking up with my face feeling like it has a layer of ash over it. Wash that makeup off! If you don’t want to use a cleanser twice in one day, just use an oil to remove your makeup and wipe the excess off with a washcloth.
Use a body cream instead of lotion: Body creams contain more butters and oils than “regular” lotions, so they go hand in hand with some of the other tips on this list. They will keep you ash free and coat the skin longer than lotion, which is especially beneficial if your hands are exposed to the cold all day. Oyin Whipped Pudding is one of my absolute favorite creams to use during winter.
Avoid toners with isopropyl alcohol: This really isn’t a winter tip as isopropyl alcohol is drying during anytime of the year, but it’s especially drying when it’s already dry and cold outside. Just stay away!
Consider using a jade roller: Even if you don’t believe in the energetic properties of crystals, using a jade roller on your face is soothing and it helps your moisturizer absorb into your skin. It’s also incredibly soothing to use before bed and feels wonderful on the skin. Use it to decompress and help increase the benefits of your products.
