Hair Heaven Studios: Black-Owned Business Spotlight

Because February is Black History Month, we’re highlighting black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs on the site! This February, consider finding and supporting a black-owned business to give back to the black community.

By: Leah Pylar

Mrs. Bealle L. Johnson is the owner of Hair Heaven Studios in San Antonio, Texas, where she specializes in braiding. Braids can be a great protective style and are often highlighted here on KimberlyElise.com.

I spoke with Bealle about her story and what drives her passion to continue styling hair.

Q: What inspired you to start your business?

I have always had a passion for doing hair that takes me back to when I was in high school. I would braid my friends’ and family members’ hair and would get compliments. Then, when I had children of my own, I had their hair in braids from the time their hair was long enough to catch and braid into cornrows! Now, as teenagers, they still wear their hair in some of my styles.

I stepped out on faith to pursue my dream of being a full-time business owner of Hair Heaven Studios by walking away from my corporate job in 2016. I had been working in corporate America for over 15 years and after accomplishing my goals in the Administrative/Clerical field, I knew I needed to be doing something that really utilized my God-given gift. It has been a struggle starting out on my own and going from that “guaranteed money” to the “not-so-guaranteed money,” but I would not change what I do at all. I love what I do.

Q. How can people better support black-owned businesses?

By showing up and supporting black business owners and helping them to promote their business by word-of-mouth, as well as using their services and products. If we can all come together in support and help uplift one another, the more people we will be able to help!

Q: What type of products and services do you sell at Hair Heaven Studios?

At Hair Heaven Studios, we provide protective hairstyles, such as crochet braids, natural sew-ins, cornrows, box braids, fishbone braids, double-French boxer braids, wig installations, and more. This year, we will also be selling braiding and weaving hair extensions inside the salon as well as online with local same-day deliveries.

Q: What advice do you have for people transitioning to natural hair?

I would tell them to be patient through the transition stage and also make sure to properly nourish and moisturize your natural hair to promote new, healthy hair growth.

Q: What are your favorite hairstyles right now?

Right now, I would have to say my favorite hairstyles would be the Bohemian curly crochet locs and the lemonade braids.
