Dascha Polanco Teams With Dove For #HourWithHer Girl Empowerment Campaign
Self-esteem plays a big role in not only how we view ourselves, but also how interact in the world. This especially true for girls and women as we are bombarded 24-7 with with social media and news that challenge our self image. A recent study by Dove even shows that a whopping eight out of 10 girls skip out on things as simple as raising their hands to voice their opinion when they don’t like the way they look.
In honor of women’s month, the Dove Self-Esteem Project has partnered with Orange Is The New Black actress Dascha Polanco and producer Shonda Rhimes to help impact young girls’ self-esteem. The new #HourWithHer campaign encourages women to spend an hour with young girls to help empower them to embrace their beauty and develop self-confidence.
The brand kicked off the partnership earlier this month in New York City at a mentoring event with young girls from the Boys & Girls Club of America. The partnership was a perfect fit for Dascha who has been vocal about her own journey towards celebrating her curves and body positivity.
Leading by example, she brought her own daughter Dasany to the empowering event where she talked about self confidence and learning to love yourself with the girls.
“It only takes one hour to help our girls embrace their beauty and reclaim their power,” said Dascha. “If we can impact 20 million young girls to be able to have a better relationship with themselves, than we can make a more powerful tomorrow.”
The confidence-building day was just one part of the overall campaign for lasting change. Dove has also created free accredited educational tools, including a workshop curriculum and other resources for teachers, parents, mentors and leaders to get the conversations started.
